READING CORNER
Books with Buddies Reading Program
Would you like to make a difference in the life of one of our students? Our elementary schools are looking for reading volunteers! The district is launching a new mentorship program called “Books with Buddies.” This program is being implemented to encourage students in the second grade to develop a love for reading and literacy. We will start with Georgia Brown and then move to other schools.
The program will provide one-on-one reading with a volunteer from the community who will partner with the same second-grade student for 40 minutes once a week for six weeks during the student’s lunchtime. The goal is to develop a strong bond between the mentor and the student through one-on-one attention during each session, with the intent that each student will develop a love for reading. The attention and mentoring will have a lasting impression on every student’s education.
The program will begin as soon as we have enough volunteers. The program will take place at Georgia Brown on Wednesdays and will be held during the 11:45-12:25 p.m. lunch period. You must be a cleared volunteer to participate (if you are a non-district employee).
If you are a GB Parent, a community member, or a local business owner and are interested in becoming a mentor, please email or call Marilu Gomez ([email protected] ) or our office at 805-769-1200 x 23261

SEPT/OCT 2022 NEWSLETTER
_______________________________________________________
WELCOME to the very first edition of our monthly newsletter
PASO READS!
We are thrilled to announce the grand rollout of the "Paso Reads" monthly newsletter. This issue will have information you might have learned about however, we want to ensure everyone learns about the great things PRJUSD did in the last couple of months.
It's been a feat to finally get to the first newsletter with all the technicalities and changes to our brand-new website. What an experience thus far! Gotta love technology!
Below is our Superintendent, Dr. Curt Dubost. Dr. Dubost doesn't rest when it comes to our students; he wants the best for every one of them. He will tell you once, twice, and a third time and reiterate yet again, in case you didn't hear it the first few times, he is focused on our three core academic goals: Early Literacy, Algebra Readiness, and English Language Fluency. “Paso Reads,” with the goal of every student reading at grade level by the end of third grade, is his number one priority.
We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter. We will continue to work with clarity and transparency and will strive to address your questions and address your concerns. We will be as transparent as possible, we will answer your questions or concerns. We will update you on the school district budget, social-emotional support, student loss mitigation, and so on. We will continue to work on providing opportunities for all students to excel and grow our community connections to support student success.
