The AVID Elective

    • This year Flamson offers both a 7th grade and an 8th grade AVID class.
    • AVID is an elective offered from 7th through 12th grade.
    • Many AVID students will be the first in their families to attend college.
    • The goal of AVID is to help all AVID students attend a four year college by providing academic and social support.
    • AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
    • AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
    • AVID teaches study skills, organization skills, and public speaking.
    • In-class tutorials are offered twice a week to help students perform better in their classes.
    • Guest speakers often come to class to tell students about their job, major in college, and career path.
    • Each year the AVID class visits at least one college campus. Last year we toured California State Monterey Bay and visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We also went to Cal Poly and participated in the Learn by Doing Lab and took an engineering tour. Additionally, we went to Paso High and participated in their College Fair.  8th grade AVID students had the opportunity to apply for the Bearcat Dreams Scholarship which led to an overnight college tour of UCLA (University of California Los Angeles), USC (University of Southern California), Pepperdine, and UCSB (University of California Santa Barbara).
    • In 12th grade AVID students receive support applying to colleges, and filling out scholarship and financial aid forms.
    • Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher to be in AVID and demonstrate good citizenship. All AVID students must fill out an application and participate in an interview.
    • All AVID students participate in Community Action Projects. At Flamson, AVID students run our Smash Out Hunger event which has collected 1,000 cans of food for Loaves and Fishes locally.
