Welcome to Daniel E. Lewis Middle School

    AVID

There is no specific profile for our AVID program.  Each student is evaluated on a case by case basis.

    Common qualifications for AVID include:

    • Want to work hard and go to college, even though currently they may be earning a variety of grades in their classes.
    • Will most likely be the first person in their family to attend college and who will probably be the first to graduate from a university.
    • Who have the potential to earn a university degree, but who need some guidance and support to get there.

    What is AVID?

AVID is an elective class for seventh and eighth grade students who want to go to college. AVID is the largest, most comprehensive college-readiness system used by schools to improve the academic preparation and performance of all students.

AVID focuses on the tools students need to succeed! We are building learners who think, who share ideas, and who believe in their own success. Through our AVID program, students learn to take notes, get organized, ask questions and have group discussions called “Socratic Seminars”.

At its heart, AVID is a philosophy:  Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge.

"I chose AVID because it helps you get into a 4 year college." - Maria Sandoval

"I want to raise my grades, understand more in school, and get help." -Brittany Garcia

"I joined AVID because I want my future to be great.  I want to get a scholarship and get into college." - Frankie Anaya

Every middle school student should be thinking about their future and I believe it is our job to introduce them to career and college options. The fact is, most students will need some form of education after high school. We have students in all of our classes that show great determination. When a student chooses the AVID Elective, they get help channeling all that determination toward academic success. This class gives them direction and confidence. We hope to see them someday attending a university.

I want to help students achieve their potential.  It is very rewarding to help students set goals and get to where they want to be. Many students want to go to college, but need to learn the skills to be successful there. AVID is a great place to teach them how to study, how to ask good questions and take charge of their learning. I look forward to a great year in AVID!
