    Welcome, Leopard Families and Friends,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!  I am so excited to begin my first year here with Paso Robles Joint Unified District and especially being at Lewis Middle School!  This is my twenty-fifth year in education and what a great way to celebrate my silver anniversary then to be back in the middle school world. I spent nineteen years in the classroom and thirteen of those were with middle school students.

A little bit about myself. I am a native to San Luis Obispo County and attended K-12 schools in Arroyo Grande. I am a graduate of Cal Poly with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a graduate of University of Maryland with a Masters in Chemical and Life Sciences. I have taught from kindergarten to university level, even teachers and principals!  My educational leadership experience spans from Lucia Mar Unified School District to my last position with Atascadero Unified School District. I have lived in the north county since 1998 and it is home! I have two daughters, my oldest attends CSU Channel Islands and is majoring in biotechnology, while my youngest will be finishing her senior year at Templeton High School.

In alignment with our District belief that every student will have success, we believe in the importance of meeting the academic and social/emotional needs of every child. We are committed to maintaining a safe environment which empowers, challenges, and connects every student to our Lewis team! With that in mind, we are excited about our Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) framework at Lewis Middle School  which provides a  proactive approach to  behavioral supports and social culture for all students. On campus or through distance learning, students take pride in our SPOTS (Success, Positive Attitude, Ownership, Teamwork, Safety Minded) and are commended throughout the day for demonstration of those characteristics in their daily routine. It is important to us that your student be supported in developing healthy habits that support the whole child.

In addition, we are immensely grateful and proud of our PTO/DELL organization which consists of many parents and volunteers who assist in the office and organize fundraisers, dances, assemblies, field trips, and much more. As we launch our 2020-21 school year, consider getting involved in our PTO/DELL!  For further information, please email Dellpto@gmail.com  or stop by the Lewis Middle School office.

It is a great honor to be named principal of Lewis Middle School and I am well aware of the great educational experiences that have occurred on this campus. I am a huge believer and supporter of highly engaging educational experiences for our students to better prepare them for high school, university, and the working world. I know that it will be an interesting and different start to the new school year, but I know my excellent staff will be able to welcome all students back to Lewis and provide high quality instruction through distance learning or the hybrid model.

    Welcome Leopards!

    Kurt Payne
