More than 1.5 million computers are declared surplus by California industries and private businesses each year. In these difficult financial times, donated equipment can provide ways for schools and districts to acquire technology access for students. Many private citizens wish to donate computers to their schools and districts. A computer, whether refurbished or new, is only one necessary component for successfully integrating technology into the classroom. Other critical components are staff development; learning resources, i.e.: software and video; facilities, e.g.: telecommunications infrastructure; and, technical assistance needs, including installation and operation and maintenance of the technology. Often, addressing these components is as costly, if not more so, than acquiring the computers themselves. It is important to understand that while there is a use for donated computers, these computers will not replace the need for many different types of modern technology in our schools.

To insure that donated technology enhances students' experiences in Paso Robles Public Schools, there are certain guidelines in place for accepting donated computer equipment.

By and large, Paso Robles Public Schools accepts donated equipment on a case-by-case basis so that it can be utilized in a classroom with little requisite maintenance and tested compatibility with PRPS Wide Area Network and computer system. While most used equipment may not have all of the modern day computing features, this equipment may indeed fill an important niche in your instructional program.
