Contests

 

Balsawood Glider 

2-3 students per team. Students will design and build a glider made of balsawood, which will travel the longest horizontal distance in the air. The Glider will be launched by means of rubber bands.

Brain Power

1-2 students per team. Students will build a model of a bisected head and will answer questions drawn from related assigned reading provided in the MESA Day curriculum.

Crystal Growing

1-2 students per team. Students will grow the largest, best-formed crystal from any water-soluble compound, including chrome alum.

Mathematics

Individual type of contest. All students who participate in MESA Day will take a math exam. Students will take an exam that will measure competency in mathematical concepts that relate to the California Standards for the student's current math course.

  • Algebra I
  • Geometry
  • Algebra II/ Trigonometry/ Pre-calculus
  • Calculus

Mousetrap Car

1-2 students per team. Students will build a car, powered by a standard size mousetrap, which will travel the longest distance up a 30-degree incline.

Prepared Speech

Individual type of contest. Students will organize and deliver a focused, coherent presentation that conveys ideas clearly. Students have the opportunity to be creative, prepare, practice and make an excellent presentation. The purpose of the speech is to provide information about a specific topic. The audience should understand the speech and become engaged in the presentation. Speeches must be original work of the student.

Simulated Verbal SAT 3

Individual type of contest. All senior high school participants at MESA Day must take the exam. Students will participate in an exam that simulates a verbal section of the SAT I exam and measures competency in sentence completions, analogies and critical reading. The exam administered on MESA Day will differ from an actual verbal section of the SAT I exam in two ways: scoring and length.
