How are you? In the marvelous metric world, volume is an important
physical property which we measure. You have a chance to show Mr.
Light Bulb how knowledgeable you are concerning metric volume. If you
are able to answer 14 out of 15 correct on the pretest you will not need
to perform this package.
If you have successfully
completed the pretest you are a master in metric volume. If you did
not get at least 14 out of 15 correct then you are able to walk your way
through the metric world of volume with Mr. Light Bulb.
You will also begin
to understand approximate volumes of different objects.
Metric volume is so easy to understand as metric length. The basic unit of volume is the liter. A liter is a cube which has a length, width, and height of 10 centimeters. A cube is what you might call a square box.
WOW! LOOK! A DIAGRAM OF A CUBE WHICH IS A LITER
BIG.
Did you see the size
of the diagram of the cube? Let us calculate the volume of the cube.
Two liters would fit into a small shoe box. The mathematical expression
for the volume of a box is length times width times height.
The symbol cm3 is read
as centimeter cubed or cubic centimeter. A cubic centimeter is a cube
with the length, width, and height all 1 centimeter in length.
Look at the diagram of the cubic centimeter below. The cubic centimeter
is about the size of a sugar cube.
QUESTIONS
1) What is the volume of a cube which has its length, width, and height equal to 1 cm?
2) What is the volume of a cube which has a length, width, and height equal to 10 cm?
3) What is the other name for a cubic centimeter or 1 cm3?
4) What is the other name for a cube with a volume of 1000 cm3?
5) What is equation used to determine the volume of a rectangular box?
A
simple way to convert between the prefixes of metric volume is through the
use of the metric staircase. Mr. Light Bulb will show you the metric
staircase.
NOW IT'S STARTING TO MAKE SENSE!
To give you an idea of what a cubic meter is, Mr. Light Bulb will demonstrate.
A cubic meter of 1m3 is about the same size as the refrigerator
part of your refridgerator/freezer At home. The cubic meter is used to measure
very large objects, such as the water in a pool or the room inside of a railway
box car.
