Project_1 is the creation of the 2006-2007 InvenTeam of Paso Robles High School’s Design Engineering class. We chose the name project one because it is our first task that we applied our programming and circuitry knowledge to and learned to market in this school year. Our specific problem to solve was how to create a simple soldering kit that teaches rudimentary electronics, soldering, and circuitry skills. The product had to have marketable qualities such as attractiveness and must be innovative and original in design.

Our knowledge gained by learning about microcontrollers played a key role in our brainstorm of ideas for the product, which ranged from LED pens to circular light shows. In the end we chose a simple pc board with eight LED’s flashing in a circular pattern that did not require the use of costly microcontrollers or microprocessors. This brought our cost down to a reasonable level for the manufacturers and the consumers alike. We instead used a 555 timer coupled with a 74HC164 shift register to produce the desired effect with maximum cost efficiency.

We intend to market Project_1 to fellow Endeavour classes and electronics classes on our campus as well as to any others who are interested in supporting our student-designed product.
